Even before the recent pandemic, cybersecurity teams were struggling. According to a 2019 report on the state of CISOs, 65% of cybersecurity professionals reported feeling burned out and a similar number were contemplating quitting their jobs and leaving the industry altogether.
The Coronavirus pandemic has significantly exacerbated this reality as IT professionals account for a defensive posture that now includes remote teams and decentralized operations. At the same time, today’s prolific threat landscape, including phishing, malware, ransomware, and insider threats, has not abated.
As a result, more than three-quarters of cybersecurity professionals now report feeling burned out. What’s more, IT teams are struggling with many of the same pandemic-related challenges as workers in other sectors, including distraction, disengagement, and morale.
For companies, the timing couldn’t be worse. 91% of businesses reported an increase in cyber attacks since moving teams off-site. Meanwhile, the cost of data breach recovery is at an all-time high, increasing by $137,000 for companies in a remote work environment.
Of course, the immediate financial implications are just the beginning. Consumers are increasingly unwilling to do business with companies that can’t protect their data. A recent Harris Poll found that nearly 80% of consumers feel that a company’s data security capacity is “extremely important.” Consequently, 75% say they will “not buy a product from a company – no matter how great the products are – if they don’t trust the company to protect their data.”
In other words, cybersecurity is a bottom-line issue for today’s companies as the recovery costs and reputational damage demand attention and accountability.
That’s why, even as companies grapple with profound economic uncertainty, 70% of organizations plan to increase cybersecurity spending in the year ahead. As our recent Situation Report noted, many leaders are looking to support their in-house cybersecurity capacity as a managed service provider (MSP) in the next six months.
